Individuals and organizations come to coaching for many different reasons but the underlying reason is change.
Coaching is a professional partnership – an alliance – that supports the achievement of extraordinary results based on goals set by the individual or the team.
Clients can experience fresh perspectives, enhanced interpersonal effectiveness, improvement in productivity, greater satisfaction with their career, clarity of purpose, and most importantly, the attainment of their goals.
You may be thinking, "Well, that sounds good but what does that mean in practice?"
In practice,
- The coach and client are peers but they know different things. The client is an expert in themselves. The coach’s expertise is in the coaching process.
- The client has the answers (even when the client does not feel that way.) The coach has the questions.
- The client sets the agenda for what they want to accomplish…in other words, where do they want the change to occur. The coach ensures that the agenda is held.
- The client speaks. The coach listens…really listens.
- The client takes action. The coach holds the client accountable.
- There is a constantly repeated cycle of action and insight. Then more action and more insight.
This is how change is accomplished.
After a while it becomes clear to clients that they are in charge of the agenda, they are in charge of the relationship, AND they are in charge of the changes they are making in their lives. They are no longer listening to those strong, self-limiting conversations (the “fences”) that they used to have inside their heads. They are realizing how powerful they are (the “spurs”). And they are taking powerful actions and getting powerful results.
